Holistic Approach to Balanced Mental Health

Hello, I'm Dr. Travis Parry, and I'm delighted to welcome you to my blog. Today, I want to share a personal journey that led me to explore the concept of financial balance in relationships. Whether you're joining us from YouTube, Facebook, or LinkedIn, I'm thrilled to have you here to discuss a topic that has been on my mind for years.

My Introduction to Financial Balance

When I began my career as a financial advisor and coach, I had my own preconceptions about money. My upbringing played a significant role in shaping my views on finances. You see, my parents, like many others, had their struggles with money, and it was the one topic where they never seemed to see eye to eye. This constant financial tension added stress to their marriage and, inevitably, to my life.

My interest in financial balance stemmed from my own experiences. As a financial advisor, I started noticing similar patterns among the couples I worked with. The renowned financial expert, Dave Ramsey, often emphasizes the importance of couples being on the same financial page. I had witnessed firsthand the impact of financial disagreements on relationships.

However, I soon realized that Dave's advice, while practical, didn't delve deep enough into the underlying issues that money could bring to the surface in relationships. Money was repeatedly cited as the number one reason for divorce, but why was it so divisive?

The Journey of Exploration

My quest for answers led me to pursue higher education, including a master's degree in psychology and a PhD in marriage and family human development. I was determined to understand why couples grappled with money issues so intensely.

One of the significant breakthroughs in my journey came when I encountered the concept of "money scripts" as described by Klontz and Klontz. These scripts represent the beliefs and attitudes we hold about money, often formed in our early experiences.

Yet, something was still missing. I found that couples with shared values and goals tend to have healthier relationships and better financial stability. The missing piece of the puzzle was understanding the historical context that had shaped their money scripts.

Bridging the Gap

In 2019, I embarked on a nationwide speaking tour, addressing what I called the "relational finance gap." This gap represented the disparities in financial scripts and values between couples. To bridge this gap, I shared three key aspects that couples should address:

Financial History: Understanding Your Values

Reflect on your upbringing and the financial values instilled in you by your parents and close family members. Were they frugal or extravagant? Understanding your money history is crucial because it influences your current financial behavior.

Financial Present (Money Scripts): Reprogramming Your Beliefs

Examine your current money scripts—the beliefs you hold about money and how you manage it. Are you a saver or a spender? Your present scripts are often influenced by your money history. Reprogramming these beliefs can lead to healthier financial behavior.

Financial Future: Setting Shared Goals

Work together as a couple to establish shared financial goals for the future. Consider where you want to be in five, ten, or twenty years. Setting joint goals creates a sense of financial unity and purpose.

While there may be debates about joint or separate accounts and who manages finances, research suggests that trust and alignment in values matter more than account structures. For those in first marriages, sharing financial accounts is often recommended to avoid financial secrecy.

Conclusion: A Path to Financial Harmony

In conclusion, my journey into understanding financial balance in relationships has taught me that it's possible for couples to achieve harmony in their finances. By addressing these three aspects—financial history, money scripts, and shared goals—couples can enhance their financial intimacy and achieve a better balance in their financial lives.

Money isn't the root problem; it's often a reflection of trust and communication within a relationship. I hope that my journey and the insights I've shared today can help you and your partner embark on your path to financial balance and a more prosperous relationship.

Thank you for joining me on this journey, and until next time, remember to live life on purpose.
